St George and the Dragon is most probably a replica of the original sculpture dating from 1314 that once stood in the upper part of St George's gate in Antwerp. In 1544 it was moved to the house of the archery guild of St George.
Recent research with regard to the restoration shows that the surface of the sculpture was once polychrome: the horse was coloured grey with a black mane; the dragon was blue and lay on a grey rock covered with green grass.
