Dit hedendaags kunstwerk is een creatie van Serra Tansel. Zij maakte het werk als onderdeel van de MAS expo Istanbul Antwerp Port Cities Talk, 2015. Dat gebeurde in het kader van Europalia en tijdens een residentie met AIR (Artist in Residence) Antwerpen. Serra Tansel deed tijdens haar residentie bij AIR antropologisch onderzoek in Antwerpen en creëerde vervolgens deze installatie. "Dunya Döner" betekent "de wereld draait door" en "döner" betekent naast "draaien" ook het "kebabgerecht". Dunya Döner zou dan ook de naam van een kebabzaak kunnen zijn. Döner Kebab heeft zich vanuit Turkije wereldwijd verspreid door migratie. De kunstenaar wil de kebabshop een hogere sociale status geven door dit beeld in een museumcollectie op te nemen.
This contemporary art work was created by Serra Tansel in November 2015, as part of the Europalia and MAS exhibition Istanbul – Antwerp. Port City Talks. Serra Tansel was in residence in 2015 at AIR (Artist in Residence) Antwerp, where she did research and created this work.
For the Istanbul - Antwerp. Port City Talks project, she decided to take the Turkish immigrant community in Antwerp and the Turkish kebab shops as the link between these two cities. Dünya means world and Döner means the meat dish but also to rotate/revolve. She came up with this pun about world’s revolution and döner kebab to correlate people’s immigration around the world with world’s rotation around the Sun. She also wanted to take the kebab shop out of the low culture context it is stuck in and place it in a museum, a place that is regarded to have a higher social status.
