This centrepiece illustrates the most famous Antwerp legend surrounding the origin of the name Antwerpen. The city’s name is said to come from hand-werpen, trowing the hand. At the top stands the Roman soldier Brabo. He is about to throw away the severed hand of the giant Antigoon.
This unique silver showpiece was placed on a table for decoration. It is a copy of the larger than life-size statue on the Grote Markt, the Brabo Fountain created by Jef Lambeaux in 1887. The bronze statues on a rock of basalt stones of the Grote Markt were executed in silver and placed on a rock of amethyst on a smaller scale.
The copy was manufactured by Huis Lens in the Huidevettersstraat. Diamond dealer Louis Coetermans commissioned this silver version around 1910.
In that same year it was exhibited at the Brussels World’s Fair.
