Kannon Bosatsu is the Japanese version of Avalokitesvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Jizo has been one of his manifestations since the 16th century. He is a very popular deity in Japan, particularly among pregnant women and travellers who seek his protection. Jizo accompanies the souls of deceased children in finding their way to the world of the dead and in obtaining a better rebirth.
This princely figure sits on a lotus throne, which is an indication of his divine status. He holds a scroll in his left hand.
