MAS Collection Online

The MAS collection presently comprises something in excess of 600,000 objects. The collection continues to grow and the information relating to these objects is being continually supplemented. At present, the collections database includes basic data for 90% of the objects.

This site is where the MAS makes its online collection accessible to all, allowing everyone to browse and view its highly varied collection, including those objects held in storage.

Online access to the collection is a work in progress. We continue to add photographs and information, while making improvements to data that is obsolete. We’re also gradually rectifying any discriminatory historical headings and descriptions. The original versions are subsequently preserved in the archive.

Objects are supplied with an image, provided that they have been photographed and are not subject to copyright or a right to privacy.

This database includes several objects of a historically or culturally sensitive nature, such as sacred objects and objects connected with war, social inequality, colonization or racism. One particular group concerns around 50 objects comprised of human skull fragments. We do not display any photographs of these objects. Nevertheless, they are mentioned in the database, given our aim to communicate as transparently as possible about the collection.
