Steengoed wordt gemaakt van grijs- of bruinbakkende klei die wordt gebakken bij hoge temperatuur. Het materiaal is zeer hard, weinig poreus, neemt geen smaak aan en is goed te reinigen. Daarom is het bijzonder geschikt om vloeistoffen in te bewaren en om uit te drinken.
Tot in de zeventiende eeuw behoorde steengoed tot het meest luxueuze drinkgerei in Noordwest-Europa. Het assortiment bestond uit wijnkannen en bierkruiken in allerlei maten en vormen die vaak rijkelijk met reliëfdecoraties waren versierd. Dergelijke kruiken zijn in grote getale gemaakt en komen veelvuldig op schilderijen voor. Later werd steengoed als luxeproduct geleidelijk vervangen door glas en de rijk beschilderde Delftse faience.
Steengoed werd vooral in het Duitse Rijnland, het gebied tussen Keulen en Aken, geproduceerd.
