Pluimen behoorden tot de talrijke voorwerpen die als ruilmiddel werden gebruikt bij transacties tussen bepaalde Peruviaanse volkeren en groepen uit andere geoculturele gebieden; ze waren niet intrinsiek kostbaar, maar ontleenden hun ruilwaarde aan hun bonte uiterlijk en hun kleurenpracht. In bepaalde riten en gebruiken werd aan pluimen een speciale rol toegekend. Paradijstangara's ('Tangara chilensis') zijn kleine vogels met veel verschillende kleuren, en er moest dus een indrukwekkend aantal pluimen worden verzameld voor het vervaardigen van kledingstukken. Dankzij de diversiteit van het verenkleed van deze vogelsoort beschikten de pluimenkunstenaars wel over een materiaal waarmee ze de meest uitlopende kleuren konden combineren en vaak zeer complexe motieven konden uitwerken. De studie van Peruviaanse pluimenkunst behelst diverse terreinen: de gebruikte technieken, de artisticiteit, de keuze van vogelsoorten en de mogelijke handelsrelaties tussen de kustgebieden, het hoogland en de Amazonegebieden.
