Diving suit belonging to the Antwerp harbourmasters' office
Description
The cities' lock-keeper divers manned the marine locks. They had diving equipment at their disposal in order to sort out any problems with the gates. Ship captains, shipmasters and shipowners were able to hire the cities' divers to deal with issues concerning anchor chains, obstacles and lost cargo. The tugboat service also acquired its own divers later on. They concentrated on salvaging and fixing the port's numerous anchor buoys.
