Model of twin-screw steamer ‘Hakone Maru’, or sister ship ‘Katori Maru’.
‘Hakone Maru’ of the Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha shipping line (NYK). Launched in July 1921 at Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co, Ltd (Nagasaki), construction number 346. Tonnage 10,423 GRT. The ship served a line to northern Europe, calling at Antwerp. Sunk after an air raid on 27 November 1943.
There were sister ships ‘Haruna Maru’, ‘Hakozaki Maru’ and ‘Hakusan Maru’, and from a similar (?) series the ‘Katori Maru’.
In the context of World War II, the Japanese flag and chimney band were removed from the model by the previous owner.
Not to be confused with the container ship of the same name (1968).
