Taffrail depicting the biblical scene Feeding the Multitude. The piece is trimmed with a border of fruit and floral vines. On the back two coats of arms, including that of Enkhuizen.
A taffrail (NL: hakkebord) is the top of the stern of a ship. On smaller sea-going vessels, until the 19th century, this taffrail was often decorated with polychromed wood carvings, with biblical motifs on the front and heraldic ones on the back. The semicircular shape is distinctive.
