Ship model of a Chinese junk (Qiongzhou / Kiungchou) - riverine junk
Description
Ship model of a riverine junk. Capacity of 14 tons.
Model built of broad planks, six transverse bulkheads and floor timbers. No futtocks. Straight bottom, fore and aft slightly rising, fore narrowing to a broad, straight, slightly raking stem beam, broadened at the top by a broad bow beam. Aft closed off by a vertical transverse bulkhead, while the planking continues, forming a slightly flaring, backward raking, rounded rudder well. Straight flaring sides. Angular bilges. Flat sheer. Almost over the entire length of the hull on each side a buffer edge of bamboo canes. On the starboard side a loose rope, hanging under the bundle over the entire length of the ship (life line?), this is missing on the port side. On the forebody a small projecting cuddy board. High curved bulkhead, behind, the fore hold with hold beam and a gallows. Tabernacle shored up on either side against the mast beam. Behind the mast the hold is divided into three parts, two hold beams onto a bulkhead with a gallows. The deck house is covered over with a roof of bamboo matting. Tail board with open stern, ‘yuloh’ thole pin on the transom beam. Opening for a mud anchor. Slightly parallelogram-shaped rudder blade. On the gallows longitudinal laths for the hatch mattings which run from board to board. Mast with cotton cloth junk sail. Mud anchor.
