Ship model of a Chinese junk (Guangdong) - warship
Description
Ship model, probably of a war junk from South China which can be paralleled with the ‘dabingchuan’, but then with long narrow leeboards with diamond-shaped perforations.
Model built of planks, ribs and bulkheads. Keel boat. Straight keel fore connecting to a raking curved stem, raised by a flat swim head with broad shoulders. Aft the keel ends before the rising stern. Rounded bilge with bluff, slightly flaring forebody, aft with bluff round stern with narrow rudder well. Underwater hull mounted with tin plates. Rounded bilges, curved sides, broad angular wale. Bulwark raised with removable wash boards. Forebody with heavy bow beam, supporting together with the piercing mast beam a side beakhead for the foremast staying. Hood, European pump windlass, hatch, capstan, partner for the mainmast. Two bordered hatch covers, companionway. The rudderpost is attached to an eyebolt. Aft on the starboard side a water tank, on the port side the caboose with two (rice) pans. Against each board a low berth. On the starboard side a davit with companion ladder, on the board a folding grating. Aft, on both boards a long plank with diamond-shaped perforations, pivoting on a spill. Two heavy boat davits, resting outside the stern. Raised poop around the rudderpost, rounded at the rear. Extended gallery with wooden wall, on top a balustrade with turnery columns, raised by an iron bulwark. On the poop deck the mast partner for eccentrically placed mizzen mast. Armed with six guns: four on deck, two on the poop (Congrève type). One figure at the pump windlass, another one at the capstan. Traces of eight figures which have disappeared. Almost rectangular rudder with diamond-shaped perforations. Three masts with sails of reed matting. Masts stayed with shrouds.
