Ship model of a Chinese junk (middle Chang Jiang?) - ‘baoqingqiuchuan’, pleasure boat
Description
A label with Chinese characters attached to the foredeck characterises this model as a ‘baoqingqiuchuan’, possibly to be translated as ‘a boat to enjoy autumn with’. Possibly a pleasure boat.
Model built of planks on transverse bulkheads. Flat bottom, fore and aft slightly rising. Stem and stern having an upright, flat, sloping swim head, upwards narrowing and intended as stem post. Angular bilges, straight sides with something of a breech on the stern. Sternwards rising sheer. Behind the stem post, fixed cuddy board, followed by a loose one. Behind it transverse arched bulkhead and open hold, covered by an arched cover in bamboo matting. Narrow gangway behind a fixed cuddy board running up to the rear end of the cover. Behind the cover, framework as meant for an awning. Balanced rudder with straight back, bent front. Single mast with parallelogram shaped sail in palm leaf and fine bamboo matting. Two small wooden trestles.
