Ship model of a riverine junk. Capacity of 230 tons. Used for the transportation of passengers on the middle reaches of the Yangzi / Chang Jiang river.
Model built of planks and transverse bulkheads. Transversely and longitudinally flat bottom, fore and aft slightly rising in a swim head. Fairly stretched fore swim head. Short rounded aft swim head. Angular bilges. Almost straight sides, flaring into two wings extending beyond the aft swim head. At two thirds of the board, two convex wales running from the fore swim head up to the tip of the wings. Behind the mast beam a capstan. Mast beam for mainmast, with a transverse cleat fitted on either side and standing far outboard in front of the gangway. Angular cabin, narrow gangway. Wheelhouse on a slightly higher deck. On either side of the stern an outward fake deck and a davit. At about the front of the wheelhouse a cross beam runs outboard, supporting the gangway. It extends in the rear in a second gangway, supported by another cross beam. Large balanced rudder. Foremast on the fore cuddy board, having a cotton sail made out of a single cloth. Mainmast in front of the cabin, having uncoloured cotton sail with one broad and four narrow strips, tacked together. Mizzen mast, against the rear of the wheelhouse in a cleat and a partner of the loose deck. Uncoloured cotton cloth sail with one broad and three narrow strips, tacked together. Sheet on a long jack boom. Cabin and wheelhouse have carvings in red and green, depicting suns, clouds and arabesques. On one side of the foremast, on the front of the mainmast and on the back of the mizzen mast a piece of paper with a Chinese character (that could not be translated).
