Block model of a Chinese junk (Shanghai) - 'neihohangchuan', passenger boat / ferry
Description
We are probably dealing here with the 'neihohangchuan' or passenger boat for creeks, built in Pootung and used as a ferry between Shanghai and smaller cities in the surroundings. According to the 'Catalogue' (1905) (p. 237 no. 595) this junk was incorrectly described as a house boat, used by officials.
Excavated block model. Bottom, transversely flat and longitudinally slightly rounded; fore angularly continuing in a flat, slightly flaring transom head; aft flat, slightly flaring flat transom. Angular bilges. Moderate sheer. Square wale, running from far beyond the fore cuddy board and ending in a straightly cut off wing. Deck house from board to board, with slightly sloping sides. Behind the front wall a small porch giving entry to a cabin. In the cabin, stairs, a table and a bunk. Behind the cabin the after cuddy board. The far ends of the wing are extended by a carline, on which lies a flying platform, behind the deck.
