Block model of a Chinese junk (Shanghai) - foreign type of house boat, so-called 'wusihkui'
Description
Excavated block model of a foreign type of house boat. Such house boats, known by the name of 'wusihkui', were hired, including crew, to rich foreigners from Shanghai to bring them to the hunting grounds around lake Taihu. Transversely straight bottom, narrowing fore and aft and rising towards a horseshoe-shaped, flat, almost vertical swim head and transom respectively. Rounded frame and board. On the stern the planking runs up to and beyond the transom and forms two wings, connected by a fake transverse cuddy board. On either side a gangway projects from the outsides of the hull. Relatively strong sheer. Flat hatch on the fore cuddy board. Deck house with flat roof and oblong skylight. On the after cuddy board a flat hatch and a transom timber with a hole for the rudderpost and a thole pin for the 'yuloh'. In the front half of the gangway a long gap on either side, in which the lee board is hanging. At the front of the deck house, on either side a heavy stanchion for the pivoting point of sheer legs. Trapezoidal rudder. One-masted lug rig. Uncoloured cotton cloth trapezoidal sail. Underwater hull bronze-coloured, reddish brown form the third board onwards, including the bulwark, deck, rudder and window frames of the deck house, the latter white.
