Model of a sea-going junk (Dandong / Antung) - fisherman / kaolou junk
Description
Sea-going junk. Capacity of 18 tons. Crew of 9 persons. According to the 'Catalogue' of 1905 (p. 46 no. 73) a 'gaodow' junk from Zhifu, but this description probably refers to a different model, because there are 3 masts instead of the usual 2. According to D. W. Waters this type comes from Dandong and is more of a fisherman than a carrier.
Model built on transverse bulkheads, planked. Bottom longitudinally slightly rounded and ending fore in a flaring swim head, aft in a flat, overhanging transom. Flaring board standing on top of the bottom. Heavy double wale continuing beyond the transom over the hull. Forebody with bulwark fore broadening, stern with rising wings. Flush-decked. Mast beam lying on the deck in front of the foremast. Oblong side coaming with hatches. Mainmast in the middle of a hatch. After cuddy board closed by a transom timber, stern closed by a transverse windlass, used to lift the rudder. Over the forebody a heavy cathead. Mainmast and mizzen mast, rigged with red cotton cloth standing lug. Front of bulwark and upper wale painted red. Halfway the forebody a red and black yin-yang symbol.
