Ship model of a Chinese junk (Chonqing) - large ‘kwatzu’-boat
Beschreibung
Ship model of a large ‘kwatzu’-boat. The ring around the mast is meant to run the tracking lines through, by means of which the ship was tracked. The roof of the central cabin is higher in order to allow the helmsman a better view. The practice of tracking ships on Chinese inland waterways was already mentioned by Marco Polo in the 13th century. Tracking ships through the dangerous rapids of the Chang Jiang often required several hundred people.
