Ship model of a Chinese junk (Sinhwa) - cargo junk, ‘mayangzi’
Beschreibung
Ship model of a cargo junk, according to the label on the roof of the deck house a ‘mayangzi’. According to Worcester (1947-48) (II, p. 452) this is in fact more of a ‘shenchuan’, for the transportation of coal. This kind of ship has a very shallow draught and was specially built for descending the dangerous rapids of the river Zi. Their home port was Sinhwa, some 150 miles above Yiyang.
Model built of planks and transverse bulkheads. Flat bottom, longitudinally fore and aft slightly rising in a fairly broadening swim head. Angular bilges, almost straight flaring sides. Flattened convex wale all along the length. Strong sheer both fore and aft. Levelling the sheer line, a broad gangway extending over the hull. Board rising up to the swim head and ending in wings. A loose deck on the forebody. Behind the transverse bulkhead a countersunk well deck, in which an angular wooden cabin. Behind the cabin, a raised steering platform. Behind the transverse bulkhead, underneath the thwart an open waist. A transverse rudder cleat with thole pin on both sides of the gangway. On each side a stanchion, both connected by a gallows. A similar gallows near the rear of the deck house. Balanced rudder with straight back, bent top. Mast with white cotton cloth sail in two broad cloths sewn together.
