Ship model of a Chinese junk (Jiujiang) - 'feixie' / 'baochuan': patrol boat / gun boat

Patrol boat for service on the Yangzi / Chang Jiang river, generally known as 'feixie' or 'baochuan', gun boat. On the sides is written that this is ‘a sampan of the first regiment of the Chinese army on the inland waterways of the Chang Jiang’. The crew of these ships consisted in a helmsman, who at the same time was in command, and 46 crew members. In calm water they were sometimes propelled by means of oars. When the ship lay at anchor an awning was erected on the stanchions amidships having the same blue and white stripes as the sails. These ships could mainly be seen on the middle reaches of the Chang Jiang, on lake Poyang and on the upper Chang Jiang as far as Chongqing.
Model built of planks and transverse bulkheads. Flat bottom, forebody rising in slightly broadening swim head, two shoulders on top, aft slightly rising and ending in a slightly sloping, angular, straight countersunk transom. Angular bilges. The sides run up to the stern and beyond the transom and form a rudder well. Two convex wales. Corbelling fore cuddy board. Rectangular open hatch, low coaming and corbelling gangway. Square hatch coaming with hatch cover. Angular after cuddy board with bulwark. Balanced rudder with rounded back and hollow top. Mast with sail in white and pale green cloths, tacked together. Rough red cotton cloth flag with white paper circle. Burgees with dented, triangular red flag with white rim. Flag staff painted with red and black bands. Two three-pronged and one two-pronged pole. White circles, red rimmed and with Chinese characters on the after body.
