Ship model of a Chinese junk (Jiujiang) - cargo junk
Beschreibung
Cargo junk used on the Yangzi / Chang Jiang river. Remarkable feature: ‘wasp waisted’, probably to limit customs duties, calculated on the breadth of the vessel at the mast beam. Capacity of 230 tons.
Model built of wide planks and bulkheads. Flat bottom, fore rising and ending into a slightly broadening swim head. Flaring board with one heavy and two finer, convex wales. The stern is formed by a curved, rising board, which forms the stern well. Closing in a flat transom, which stands on the slightly rising bottom. A broad horizontal plank and a loose fore cuddy board against the transom. Flaring board at about the mast, narrowing from bilge to deck (wasp waist). Fore cuddy board behind fixed bow beam. Behind the fore cuddy board, the side rises up to the rear. Cuddy board with shaft for capstan. Behind the mast, on each side, a transverse outrigger, projecting far outside of the hull and having a thole pin for the 'yuloh'. Deck house along the entire length having a hatch with panels. Narrow gangway. Behind the deck house a narrow transverse gangway and behind it a second deck house. Fake cuddy board, outside the hull behind the deck house. It rests on two davits. Balanced rudder, inwards bent top. Mast with uncoloured sail, with broad fore cloth and four narrow cloths, seamed together in the zigzag stitch. In the front of the mast heel there are several excavations with Chinese characters (on a piece of paper?). The doors of the fore deck house having panelling with painted blue spots and black-rimmed panels. Big doors in the aft deck house with panelling, black-rimmed and decorated with black and red carvings (scrolls and pencil of rays).
