Block model of a Chinese junk (Wenzhou) - 'bochuan', a junk for the transportation of passengers and cargo
Beschreibung
The overall appearance and decoration most of all bear resemblance to the 'bochuan', a junk for the transportation of passengers and cargo on river Min and in the bays of its estuary. The sail, however, deviates and is of a more southern type with shorter, bent upper yard, round after leech and few sail battens. This type of sail, in combination with the shape of both rudder and hull clearly indicates that it is of Fuzhou origin. An old label mentions Wenzhou to be the place of origin.
Excavated block model with transverse bulkheads. Keel boat, fore slightly rising keel beam, aft strongly rising. Connecting to a V-shaped swim head with bulging sides, aft ending in countersunk V-shaped transom. Rounded bilge. Three heavy wales, broadened in the stern by a fourth one. Fairly strong sheer. Above the wales, three triangular scupper holes. Forebody with countersunk hatch covers. Over one of the deck covers hangs a windlass. Angular high deck house with a raftport in the sides, closed by numbered transverse beams. A hatch in the flat roof on top of the raftport. In the rear part of the deck house, accommodation. Behind the cabin, the after cuddy board with two countersunk hatch covers between the gangway. The stern closed on either side by a bulkhead. The upper part of the stern connected by a fake transom beam. The after cuddy board covered over by an arched roof of bamboo leaves and matting. Parallelogram-shaped rudder with rounded back. Lug rig. Uncoloured cotton cloth sail. Underwater hull black up to the wales. The front of the deck house has number ‘62’, in white on a black circle. Black-and-white oculus on forebody. Transom head black, white and red.
